Refugees United is a non-profit organisation with the mission of reconnecting thousands of separated refugee families across the globe. Using an online and mobile platform, it gives people the chance to find and reconnect with loved ones that was previously impossible.
In 2011, Wired Magazine commissioned Shamil to travel to Uganda and Kenya to photograph the many faces of the people that were using the service. He visited various refugee camps across the region and set up an outdoor studio to capture these enigmatic and captivating portraits.
“We travelled in UN jeeps and canoes to some of the most inaccessible parts of Northern Uganda along the Sudanese border. The juxtaposition of all this new technology, in an environment that felt like it was from another time! The charity had basically set up Facebook, but for refugees! But rather than the usual social media uses, this actually has the potential for an amazing outcome. It was a surreal but incredible experience.” - Shamil Tanna
